Why the NLC Insists on the N200,000 Payment to Workers by the FG

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed its belief that due to the rising cost of living in the country, the new minimum wage should be negotiated to either N100,000 or N200,000.

Both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) had initially planned to initiate a strike on Tuesday, October 4, in response to the impact of the fuel subsidy removal.

However, following a meeting with government officials in Abuja on Monday, October 2, the labor unions decided to postpone the planned strike.

Joe Ajaero, the President of the NLC, explained that the agreement was made to provide the government with an opportunity to fulfill its commitments as previously agreed with organized labor.

He emphasized that the increment of N35,000 in wages, as part of the government’s concessions, should not be mistaken for a new minimum wage, as the minimum wage could potentially be raised to as much as N200,000.
