Team Oyo Shines at National Youth Games Despite Heavy Downpour

The 8th National Youth Games officially kicked off at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State, with Team Oyo athletes making a vibrant appearance in their iconic maroon-colored kits.

Despite a heavy downpour, the cadet athletes’ morale remained high as they joined other states in a colorful display at the main bowl of the stadium.

Team Oyo on Thursday, secured two spots, with the Table Tennis male and female teams advancing past their counterparts from other states. However, the female singles team faced setbacks as Ibidun Odebiyi, Ahmed Fatima, and Adams Odunayo lost in the round of 16.

The male team will continue their campaign today, Friday, September 13th, in the round of 32 fixtures.

In the 45kg female weightlifting event, Team Oyo’s Ogbechie Boluwatife finished sixth overall, with Benue State taking first place, followed by Edo State and Delta State.

Today, the male football team from Oyo State will face Taraba State in their opening match at St. Patrick’s Catholic Secondary School football pitch, as the male and female tennis players serve-off their event from 8am at the Government House Tennis Court.

Team Oyo’s determination and spirit remain unwavering, promising an exciting performance at the Games.

5,776 athletes from 29 states are participating in this year’s edition of the National Youth Games.
