Groups Favour Oke-Ogun Coalition’s Demand for Equity, Justice

The Oke-Ogun Coalition’s recent meeting held in Ibadan, Oyo State, has garnered overwhelming public support in its demands for equity and justice, particularly in its quest for the Oyo North Senatorial District seat in 2027. Various Oke-Ogun public formations are on stage, giving credence to zone’s sentiments.

The Oyo North Senatorial District seat has eluded the people of Oke-Ogun for almost twelve years and the coalition’s efforts are seen as a beacon of hope for the region.

The Chairman of the Movement for the Rights of Oke-Ogun People, MOROP, one of the groups that make the coalition, Prince Bola Oyedepo, expressed his contrasting stance against the present status quo in Oyo North Senatorial District comprising thirteen local governments out of which Ogbomoso has only three.

“The imperative for justice transcends the use of politics to weaken any political tendency. It largely entails participatory democracy where strength is derived from equal and fair power sharing. The people of Oke-Ogun have waited for too long to have trusted representation in the Senate. This elicits our concern”, Oyedepo said.

Corroborating this opinion, a cleric and community advocate, speaking for the Oke-Ogun Crusaders, Pastor Favour Adewoyin did not mince words when he said, “Oke-Ogun is always willing to build comradeship with any other community around us and we have always cherished socio-political unification but this has been taken for granted and we would be quick in taking a deep breathe to set the boundaries straight.”

“The Coalition’s position captures the struggle of a people who have been marginalised for a very long time. This is the time to say No to oppression. This is the time to stand strong for fairness, justice, equity and equality. All men were created equal by God and they should have the same access to realise or fulfill their aspirations all the time, not some of the time.”

“Oke-Ogun people are not lesser people. They are not people to be looked down upon and they should not look down on themselves. They are stakeholders in the common heritage of Oyo State and should not be denied their own rights and priviliges. So, enough is enough. Enough of watching things happen against them! Enough of eating from the crumbs that fall from the master’s table,” Adewoyin said.

In the same development, Mrs. Mubo Ojeleye, a school proprietress in Lagos and indigene of Oke-Ogun, noted that it was right time Oke-Ogun freed itself from the “manacles of agelong manipulations which have escalated our relative underdevelopment.”

“For years, Oke-Ogun seems to have been tied with manacles of agelong manipulations which have escalated our relative underdevelopment and we must struggle our ways out of it for the sake of our children. For example, if Ibadan, for whatever reason now, is holding tight to the governorship ticket, we also must do same with the senatorial ticket,” Mrs Ojeleye said.

In addition to Ojeleye’s submission, a member of the Oke-Ogun Revives, Mr. Samuel Fatunbi from Iwajowa local government area said, “…we are not slaves, but sons and daughters, born the same way as those who have been taking advantage of our common heritage at the expense of our patience and sense of understanding guiding against zonal crisis. But, there should be equity in driving our relationship if peace will continue to reign.”

Oke-Ogun coalition’s stance has resonated deeply with the people of Oke-Ogun, who feel marginalized and excluded from the contemporary political process. The group’s demands for equity and justice are seen as a necessary step towards addressing the region’s long-standing grievances.

According to sources, the coalition’s meeting was attended by various stakeholders, including community leaders, politicians, and activists. It was characterized by a sense of determination and resolve, as participants vowed to work together to achieve their goals.

The formation’s efforts have been praised by many, who see the group as a champion of the people’s rights and its demands for equity and justice are seen as a necessary step towards promoting peace and stability in the region.

As the coalition continues to push for Oyo North Senatorial District seat among other things, many are optimistic that their efforts will, without fail, yield positive results. The group’s determination and resolve are proofs of the power of collective action and community mobilization.

Observers say the Oke-Ogun Coalition’s success will depend on its ability to mobilize support from across the region, hoping that the group has been engaging in outreach efforts, meeting with community leaders and stakeholders to build support for their cause.

Indications however, show that despite the challenges ahead, the coalition remains committed to its goals “…as its leaders have shown solemn and realizable determinations in pushing for equity and justice, even in the face of adversity,” said an analyst.

As the people of Oke-Ogun continue to rally behind the coalition, it is clear that their demands for equity and justice will not be ignored. The group’s efforts mark an important turning point in the region’s history, as the people demand a seat at the table and a voice in the political process.

“In the end, the Oke-Ogun Coalition’s success will depend on its ability to sustain momentum and build support from across the region. As the people of Oke-Ogun continue to demand equity and justice, it is clear that their voices will be heard someday soon,” a political commentator said.
