President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a series of major road infrastructure projects and a trailer park concession with a combined value of over N610 billion across seven states of the federation, in another major step towards strengthening Nigeria’s road network, facilitating trade and improving transportation infrastructure.
The Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, disclosed this on Wednesday shortly after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The approved projects cover Ekiti, Ogun, Rivers, Niger, Lagos, Oyo and Abia States and include road reconstruction and rehabilitation works, as well as public-private partnership concessions for strategic transport infrastructure.
The latest approvals came alongside other far-reaching decisions taken by the FEC, including the directive by President Tinubu that funds recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) be channelled to the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to support its increasing financial obligations. The Council also approved major interventions in the health sector, including the comprehensive overhaul of the National Hospital, Abuja, as well as the construction of a N302 billion cancer treatment centre.
Details of the approved road and infrastructure projects across the seven states are as follows:
The Federal Government approved N159.83 billion for the reconstruction of the Ado-Ekiti–Iyin–Aramoko–Itawure–Osun border road in Ekiti State, alongside N54.52 billion for Phase II rehabilitation of the Ado-Ekiti–Afe Babalola University Road, which forms part of the Ado–Ijan–Iluomobi–Imesi–Ondo border route. The Council also approved N54.12 billion as a variation order for the rehabilitation of the Abeokuta–Iboro–Ilaro Road in Ogun State.
Further approvals include N74.51 billion for the reconstruction of the 15-kilometre Port Harcourt–Eleme Junction–Onne Port Junction section of the East-West Road in Rivers State, as well as N94.24 billion for the construction of the Ilara–Iselu Road, Phases II–V, in Ogun State. The projects are expected to improve connectivity, ease movement of people and goods, and strengthen economic activities along the affected corridors.
Under the highway and trailer park concession arrangements through public-private partnerships, the FEC approved N56.75 billion for the development of the 7.9-kilometre Dikko–Maje section of the Suleja–Minna Road in Niger State and N96.43 billion for the operation and maintenance of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The Council also approved N19.70 billion for the development of a greenfield trailer park at Aro-Ngwa in Abia State.
The latest approvals underscore the Federal Government’s continued commitment to upgrading critical transport infrastructure and creating a more efficient road network capable of supporting economic growth, enhancing regional connectivity and facilitating the movement of goods and services across the country.
The projects, particularly the strategic road corridors and the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway concession, are expected to contribute significantly to improved transportation efficiency while supporting commerce, investment and job creation. The development of the Aro-Ngwa trailer park is also expected to provide a more organised facility for articulated vehicles and contribute to safer and more efficient movement of goods.
The approvals form part of the Tinubu administration’s broader infrastructure development agenda aimed at addressing critical deficits in the nation’s transport system and providing sustainable infrastructure that will support economic growth and improve the quality of life of Nigerians.
