As Muslims worldwide marked Eid-ul-Adha 1446 AH on June 6, 2025, the sacred festival of sacrifice once again reminded us of the virtues of faith, generosity, and compassion. Beyond the prayers and rituals, it was heartening to witness the exemplary philanthropic gestures of several distinguished individuals who made this Eid a beacon of hope and joy for many, especially the less privileged in Oyo State and beyond.
Among the notable non-political figures, the Aare Musulumi of Yorùbá land, Edo, and Delta, Alhaji Daud Makanjuola Akinola (DDAMAK), stood out for his remarkable commitment. I had the privilege of visiting his palace on invitation for my Ileya ram where I saw multitudes of sacrificial rams and detailed lists of beneficiaries, reflecting his meticulous approach to serving imams and Muslim communities across multiple states. His generosity transcends boundaries, embodying the true spirit of Eid. This was what I personally witnessed.

It is crucial to dispel the misconception that the office of the Aare Musulumi is a source of unlimited wealth or an automatic channel for free donations. Rather, this role demands sincere dedication without financial burden or expectation of material gain by the occupant of that office. Such humility and responsibility are essential if we are to encourage more devoted leaders to serve the Ummah faithfully by accepting the islamic chieftancy titles.
Another inspiring figure is Asiwaju Adinni of Oyo State, Alhaji Mutiullah Oladejo Abdul Azeez, popularly known as Onimalu. Though not a politician, he has consistently supported the less privileged during both Ramadan and Eid through food distribution, Qur’anic competitions, and sacrificial gifts. His ongoing compassion highlights how service to humanity transcends titles and politics.
Among politicians, Senator Abdulfatai Buhari’s extensive distribution of rams across all senatorial districts deserves recognition. The Ogbomoso born and the serving senator representing Oyo North in the Senate has a chequered history of generosity that predates his political career, and he has emphasized that his acts of charity are purely for Allah’s pleasure, not for political gain or publicity. This stance teaches us that true philanthropy is an act of worship, not a tool for self-promotion. In a particular year, he rebuked his aides who shared pictures of three trailer load of rams to the public, saying it would diminish his rewards from Almighty Allah.
As Nigeria’s Muslim community celebrates Eid-ul-Adha, these leaders exemplify the values of sacrifice, humility, and selfless service that Prophet Ibrahim (AS) embodied. Their actions inspire us to look beyond rhetoric and appreciate genuine efforts that uplift our communities.
In a time when unity, peace, and compassion are sorely needed, may their examples encourage others to serve with sincerity and humility, making every Eid a true celebration of faith and humanity.
I have decided to publish this article to honor those whose generosity I have personally witnessed and can attest to in order to encourage others to emulate these exemplary conduct and to advise the gossipers to refrain from gossip.
May Allah reward all who give sincerely during this blessed season.
