Senate Launches Bold Reform To Transform Nigeria’s Agricultural Colleges

The Nigerian Senate has unveiled an ambitious reform agenda aimed at repositioning agricultural colleges and institutions across the country to align with global standards and climate-smart innovations.

This was disclosed during a high-level stakeholder session convened by the Senate Committee on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions, chaired by Senator Sharafadeen Abiodun Alli, at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Senator Alli emphasized that agricultural education remains critical to Nigeria’s food security, economic diversification, and youth empowerment goals.

He outlined the committee’s plans, including legislative reforms, increased funding advocacy, and international collaborations.

A key highlight of the session was the announcement that the Senate will lead a delegation of agricultural educators and institutions to the COP30 Climate Conference in Brazil.

The committee’s technical consultant, Mr. Promise Amahah, described the engagement as a historic move to promote green colleges and showcase Nigeria’s innovations on a global stage.

“The Senate is not just legislating; it is leading global advocacy. At COP30, Nigeria will present innovations from its agricultural institutions and build alliances to attract investment and knowledge transfer,” Amahah said.

Senator Alli also announced plans to host the first-ever Legislative Summit and Expo on Agricultural Colleges and Institutions in October 2025, followed by a Global Benchmarking Tour in early 2026 to study best practices in Brazil and the EU.

He called on stakeholders to remain committed to the transformation agenda, reiterating the committee’s openness to partnerships and international exchange.
