M.K.O Abiola’s Wife, Doyin Abiola, Passes On At 82

Renowned journalist and trailblazing media executive, Dr. Doyin Abiola, has passed away at the age of 82. She reportedly died at exactly 9:15 p.m yesterday after a period of illness.

Dr. Abiola, the former Editor and Managing Director of National Concord, was the first Nigerian woman to serve as editor of a daily newspaper—a groundbreaking achievement in the nation’s media history.

As the wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola, winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election and founder of the Concord media empire, Doyin Abiola stood firm through the storms that followed the historic political upheaval. She bore the weight of both personal and professional trials during the dark days that followed the annulment and its repercussions on the Concord group.

Her academic journey began at the University of Ibadan, where she earned a degree in English and Drama in 1969. She began her journalism career at Daily Sketch, where she penned a popular column titled Tiro, addressing social and gender issues. In 1970, she left for the United States to pursue a Master’s degree in Journalism.

Upon her return to Nigeria, she joined Daily Times as a Features Writer and rose to the position of Group Features Editor. In 1979, she obtained a Ph.D. in Communications and Political Science from New York University, after which she returned to Daily Times and joined its prestigious Editorial Board alongside greats such as Stanley Macebuh, Dele Giwa, and Amma Ogan.

However, her stay at Daily Times was short-lived. She was soon invited to pioneer the editorial direction of the newly established National Concord, where she became Editor and, in 1986, rose to the position of Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief—the first Nigerian woman to hold such a position in a daily newspaper.

Dr. Abiola married MKO Abiola in 1981, and her career at National Concord would span over three decades, during which she played an integral role in shaping the direction of Nigerian journalism. She also served in several advisory and leadership roles within the media industry.

She was the Chairperson of the Awards Nominating Panel at the maiden edition of the Nigerian Media Merit Awards and a member of the Advisory Council, Faculty of Social and Management Sciences, Ogun State University.

Dr. Abiola was widely celebrated for her commitment to excellence in journalism and media development. She received the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence (DAME) Lifetime Achievement Award for her lifelong contributions to media as a pillar of democracy. She was only the second woman to receive the award after Mrs. Omobola Onajide.

In 1986, she was also awarded the prestigious Eisenhower Fellowship in recognition of her professional distinction and leadership promise.

Dr. Doyin Abiola’s legacy as a pioneer, leader, and icon of Nigerian journalism is indelible. She leaves behind an inspiring footprint of courage, intellect, and excellence.
