Impeachment: CSO insists Ondo Assembly strictly adheres to the rule of law

African Civil Society Forum (AFRICSOF) has expressed deep concern regarding the lack of procedural democracy in the deputy governor of Ondo State, Lucky Ayiedatiwa’s impeachment process by the State House of Assembly.

The conglomerate of civil societies in Africa, during a press conference in Abuja on Monday, cautioned the lawmakers to strictly follow and be guided by the principles of the rule of law and democratic procedures.

Dr. Tunji John Asaolu, the chairman of the Governing Board of the forum, expressed worry that the impeachment process is gradually being misused for political purposes.

Asaolu stated, “We share our profound concern about the steps taken by the lawmakers to impeach Ondo State’s Deputy Governor, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, based on allegations. While we do not condone any form of misconduct or impeachment itself, we strongly believe that impeachment proceedings should be conducted in strict accordance with the law and the clear constitutional provisions governing Nigeria.

“We acknowledge that the Ondo State House of Assembly is responsible for making laws in the state, but they should also be mindful of the ongoing court injunction and the nine-man reconciliation committee, led by HE. Rt. Hon. Aminu Masari, a former governor of Katsina State, established by the All-Progressive Congress (APC) at the national level.”
