Third Mainland Bridge will be reconstructed in 2024 – FG

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olukorede Keisha, announced on Friday a comprehensive rehabilitation plan for the asphalt layers of the Third Mainland Bridge. Keisha confirmed during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily that the extensive repair work will begin in late January 2024.

She explained that the crucial bridge, essential for commuters in Lagos, will be temporarily closed for a six-month period to facilitate the much-needed repairs. Keisha emphasized that they plan to conduct a complete overhaul of the aging asphalt overlay, which has been overdue for approximately 30 years, addressing the issues that have arisen due to these failures.

According to her, this project will involve a thorough renewal of the asphalt layer on both sides, replacing it with new materials designed to last for the next decade. The Federal government has already awarded the contract, with preparatory work pending until the contractor arrives on-site, as some repair components need to be imported.

During this preparatory phase, they will undertake palliative work to alleviate the condition for motorists. Importing the necessary elements for the repair is expected to take the contractor three months. Once one side is completed, traffic will be diverted to the other side, with the ultimate goal of delivering a brand new road.

In summary, the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos is set to undergo significant repairs, with a temporary closure of six months starting in late January 2024. This comprehensive overhaul of the asphalt layers aims to address long-overdue maintenance and provide a durable solution for the next decade, ensuring the safety and convenience of commuters.
