NULGE State President, Com. Adeogun Urges Members, Stakeholders to Remain Calm

The State President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Com. Ayobami Adeogun has appealed to members and other stakeholders to remain calm and focused amidst recent distractions that have no bearing on the Supreme Court’s landmark judgement on Local Government Autonomy in Oyo State.

Comrade Adeogun gave this appeal in a statement he personally signed and made available to newsmen in Ibadan on Wednesday.

“It is crucial at this juncture that members do not allow themselves to be swayed by unnecessary controversies or actions that lack substantive impact on the core issue of Financial Autonomy for Local Governments,” he stated.

According to him, “the Supreme Court’s ruling on Local Government Financial Autonomy which we have been clamouring for over two decades is a significant legal milestone designed to empower Local Governments with the Financial Independence necessary to operate effectively and address the needs of our communities”

Com. Adeogun said, “this judgement is both final and binding, and its enforcement is a constitutional mandate of Federal Government that must be respected. Any attempts to undermine or distract from this ruling are inconsequential and do not alter the legal and constitutional realities that have been established, devolves powers and authorities to constitutionally 774 Local Governments in Nigeria and such does not recognize any individual or group of persons.”

He further explained that, NULGE remains resolute and steadfast in its commitment to ensuring that the Supreme Court’s judgement is fully implemented. Knowing fully well that a month has just passed by and the remaining two months are to heightened all necessary documentations.

The focus must remain on the practical steps required to realize the benefits of financial autonomy. This involves not only adhering to legal mandates but also ensuring that Local Governments are positioned to deliver tangible improvements at the grassroots level where electorates are residing.

“To this end, NULGE is committed to prioritizing the interests of all relevant stakeholders, including the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Pensioners (NUP), and other critical affiliates.”

“The promise to put these stakeholders on the first line charge underscores NULGE’s dedication to ensuring that the benefits of Financial Autonomy are felt directly by those who are essential to the functioning and development of Local Governments. This approach is aimed at fostering substantial grassroots development and ensuring that resources are utilized effectively to meet the needs of local communities,”

The NULGE President explained further that, the Financial Autonomy granted by the Supreme Court is not just a legal victory but a transformative opportunity for Local governance which resulted to undeterred efforts by NULGE. This holds the potential to drive significant advancements in local infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other vital areas.

By guaranteeing that funds are allocated directly to Local Governments, it ensures that decisions and investments are made closer to the people they affect, leading to more responsive and effective governance.

“NULGE’s commitment to advancing these goals is unwavering and remains on working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure that the transition to Financial Autonomy is smooth and that its benefits are maximized,” he added.

Com. Adeogun, however, enjoined members, stakeholders and citizens to continue on their support and engagement during this period of transition, as their cooperation and dedication are crucial for achieving the intended outcomes.

“Finally, while there may be various distractions and attempts to challenge or undermine the Supreme Court’s ruling, NULGE remains resolute in its mission to ensure the successful implementation of Financial Autonomy and needs to prioritize the needs of Primary School Teachers, Pensioners and other stakeholders which reflects a broader commitment to grassroots development and effective local governance.

“By staying focused and united, NULGE will definitely navigate these challenges and work towards a future where Local Governments are empowered to deliver meaningful improvements to the communities they serve,” he concluded.
