Nigeria Can Project Itself Through Cultural Diplomacy – Dabiri-Erewa

The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has emphasized the pivotal role of cultural diplomacy in enhancing Nigeria’s global relationships and image.

Speaking during a visit by the Director of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Kaltume Bulama Gana, at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja, Dabiri-Erewa underscored the transformative potential of cultural exchanges and initiatives.

The NiDCOM Boss noted that cultural diplomacy serves as a cornerstone for building robust bilateral and multilateral ties, fostering goodwill, and nurturing mutual respect among nations.

Drawing from recent experiences, she highlighted the impact of Nigerian cultural expressions during a visit to Vienna, Austria, where Nigerian Adire cultural festivities captivated international audiences and garnered widespread acclaim.

“I witnessed just a few days ago firsthand , the power of cultural diplomacy in Austria, where Nigerian cultural endowment not only captivated hearts but also brought communities together,And this is now a regular in many parts of the world , as Nigerians in the diaspora embark on several cultural activities “

Dabiri-Erewa said, “This underscores the importance of leveraging our cultural heritage—our music, arts, fashion, and traditions—to project Nigeria positively on the global stage.”

She further noted that the potential of cultural diplomacy to promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural tapestry globally shouldn’t be downplayed.

“Our cultural heritage embodies our identity as a people. Through strategic cultural diplomacy initiatives, we can showcase the diversity, creativity, and beauty that define Nigeria to the world”.

In response, Director, National Troupe of Nigeria, Kaltume Bulama Gana expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with NiDCOM in advancing cultural initiatives.

“I am honored to collaborate with NiDCOM in promoting Nigerian performing arts both locally and internationally,”

Gana stated further that, “Our goal is to amplify the significance of performing arts in the diaspora and strengthen cultural ties with our homeland.”

The meeting concluded with a commitment from both parties to work closely on upcoming cultural events and initiatives aimed at further enhancing Nigeria’s cultural influence globally. NiDCOM reiterated its dedication to supporting Nigerian artists and cultural ambassadors in showcasing the nation’s cultural wealth across international platforms.
