Ambassador Mallam Ibrahim Agunbiade has congratulated Barrister Bilal Akinola Husayn Akeugberu on his selection as the new Grand Imam of Oyo, praising the appointment asbh “well-deserved and divinely inspired”. Agunbiade commended the Alaafin of Oyo, His Imperial Majesty Oba Abdul Hakeem Owoade Elewuetu I, for making a “thoughtful and visionary decision” that reflects fairness, scholarship, and true leadership.
Agunbiade had earlier recommended Barrister Bilal Akinola for the position, citing his unique blend of legal expertise, Islamic scholarship, humility, and peaceful disposition. He believes the new Grand Imam’s leadership will strengthen unity among Muslims in Oyo and inspire the younger generation.

Agunbiade recalled that he had earlier appealed to the monarch in an article titled “An Appeal to His Imperial Majesty: A Call for Visionary Leadership in Oyo’s Islamic Community,” published on August 8, 2025, https://themirroronline.com.ng/agunbiade-urges-oyo-state-to-choose-imam-wisely/ where he urged the Alaafin to prioritize scholarship, moral uprightness, and unity in selecting the next Grand Imam.
“Alhamdulillah! I heartily congratulate Sheikh Al Imam Barrister Bilaah Oseni Akinola on this most deserved selection as the Grand Imam of Oyo,” Agunbiade said. “This appointment is a recognition of his piety, academic distinction, and service to the Muslim Ummah. May Allah see him through and bless his leadership in the service of Islam and humanity. Aameen.”
He also thanked the Alaafin for responding to the yearnings of the Muslim community and for his consistent support for religious harmony and intellectual leadership.
“The Alaafin’s choice of Barrister Bilaah reflects foresight and justice. It is a decision that will strengthen unity among Muslims in Oyo and inspire the younger generation,” Agunbiade added.
He called on Muslim organizations, scholars, and residents of Oyo to support the new Grand Imam and to work together for peace and community development.
