For Dr Adesola Kazeem Adeduntan, “Leadership is not about being the best; it’s about making others better.” He served with considerable credit in all the places where his services were required.

The University of Ibadan, Nigeria’s premier University, is set to honour one of its most distinguished alumni, Dr. Adesola Kazeem Adeduntan, with an honourary Doctor of Science degree at its 77th (1948 – 2025) Foundation Day Anniversary & 2025 Convocation Ceremonies on Monday, 17 November, 2025.
This prestigious award recognises Dr. Adeduntan’s outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s financial sector and his trailblazing leadership in Africa’s financial services industry.
Dr Adeduntan’s remarkable journey is proof of the power of intellect, curiosity and determination. Born into the esteemed Oriolowo family on May 7, 1969, he began his academic journey at IMG Primary School, Adeoyo N4, Yemetu Aladorin, and Urban Day Grammar School, Old Ife road, both in Ibadan. His exceptional academic prowess earned him a place at the University of Ibadan, where he graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 1992.
What followed was a transformative path that defied convention. Dr. Adeduntan transitioned from veterinary medicind to global finance, leveraging his formidable intellect and insatiable curiosity to become one of Africa’s most respected and influential figures. His journey is a shining example of how talent, hard work and a willingness to explore new horizons can lead to unparalleled success. Dr. Adeduntan’s story serves as inspiration to young Nigerians and Africans, demonstrating that with passion, dedication,m and a strong work ethic, the possibilities are endless.
His professional journey is a tribute to his unshakeable commitment to excellence. Beginning as a graduate trainee at Afribank Nigeria (now part of Polaris Bank), he quickly distinguished himself as a rising star in the financial sector. His tenure at Arthur Andersen and KPMG further honed his skills in assurance, risk management and advisory services, propelling him to the position of Senior Manager in the Financial Services Division. These pivotal roles laid the foundation for his future success, equipping him with the expertise and knowledge to navigate the complexities of global finance.
His academic journey is a testimony to his insatiable thirst for knowledge and his unshakeable commitment to excellence. Dr Adeduntan’s decision to pursue a career in finance, despite his background in veterinary medicine, led him to enroll with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), becoming a chartered accountant in 2000. This milestone marked the beginning of a distinguished academic trajectory, as he went on to earn an MBA from Cranfield University, UK, as a Chevening Scholar. His academic pursuits have taken him to the world’s most prestigious institutions, including Harvard, Stanford and Oxford, demonstrating his dedication to lifelong learning and professional growth.
Dr. Adeduntan’s achievements have not gone unnoticed, with fellowships from the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (FCIB) and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA), as well as recognition from Cranfield University and the University of Ibadan for his outstanding contributions to his field. His Honourary Doctor of Science degree from Cranfield University in 2022 is a tribute to his enduring impact on the world of finance.
This quintessential financial expert’s ascent in international finance is proof of his exceptional talent, dedication and global exposure. Joining Citibank as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of its Nigeria subsidiary, he quickly proved himself, earning elevation to Senior Vice President within 15 months. His next chapter, as pioneer CFO and Business Manager of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), showcased his expertise in shaping the institution’s operational framework and securing top-tier international credit ratings. This achievement, a record that still stands, cemented AFC’s position as a leading multilateral African financial organisation. Dr Adeduntan’s remarkable rise in international finance is a shining example of how Nigerian talent can excel on the global stage, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence in finance and beyond.
His leadership at FirstBank Group has been nothing short of transformative. Joining as Executive Director and Group Chief Financial Officer in 2014, he was appointed Group Chief Executive Officer in 2016, leading the bank through a remarkable period of renewal and growth. Under his leadership, FirstBank achieved unprecedented success, with profitability soaring thirty-twofold and market capitalisation exceeding ₦1 trillion. His commitment to financial inclusion empowered millions, with the FirstMonie agent network creating over 450,000 jobs and expanding access to banking services. Dr. Adeduntan’s digital revolution has redefined the banking experience, with customer accounts growing from 10 million to 42 million and digital transactions exceeding 90%. His vision for pan-African expansion positioned FirstBank as a leading player in the region, with subsidiaries contributing over 30% of Group earnings. The numerous accolades received by FirstBank during his tenure in recognition of this significant and uncommon institutional revitalidation, include being consistently named Best Bank in Nigeria by Global Finance Magazine; Best Retail Bank in Nigeria by The Asian Banker; Best Corporate in Nigeria (2022 and 2023) by Euromoney; Best Corporate Bank in Western Africa (2022) by Bankers Awards; Financial Institution of the Year (2023) by Afrexim; Best Private Bank in Nigeria (2016, 2017, and 2020) by World Finance; and Best Core Banking Application Implementation (2021) by Asian Bankers Awards. As a dedicated advocate for education, Dr. Adeduntan is a Director of the Sigma Educational Foundation and is the current Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, promoting academic excellence and institutional development. His commitment to national development is evident in his roles as the Director of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund and a member of the Bretton Woods Committee.
Recognition of Dr. Adeduntan’s exceptional leadership has come from the highest levels, including praise from the late President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as well as Congressional Appreciation from the South Carolina House of Representatives.

Through the Firstmonie Agent Network, Dr. Adeduntan created over 450,000 jobs and delivered essential financial services to previously unbanked communities. His commitment to national service extends to his work with CACOVID and the Lagos State Security Trust Fund. His dedication to community development is evident in his latest initiative, building a primary health care centre at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, Ibadan, for health care services to the neighbourhood, and previous efforts providing borehole facilities to communities. His leadership demonstrates that business success and social responsibility are intertwined, inspiring a new standard for CSR.
His philanthropy focuses on empowerment, education and human capital development through a high-impact initiative known as Strategic Programmes for Advancement, Resilience and Knowledge (SPARK), providing young Nigerians with mentorship, digital literacy, and skills transfer. His commitment to educational governance is evident in his roles at the Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan and the Sigma Educational Foundation, enhancing tertiary education in Nigeria.
Dr Adeduntan’s illustrious career has earned him numerous global accolades, solidifying his position as a leader in African finance. His awards include African Person of the Year; Most Innovative Bank CEO in Africa and Lifetime Achievement Award in Banking, among others. Recognition extends beyond the financial sector, with honourary citizenship in Georgia, USA, and revered titles such as ApesinOla of Ibadanland, acknowledging his leadership, integrity and community contributions.
Dr. Adeduntan’s success is complemented by a fulfilling family life with his wife, Ameenat, and their adorable children, demonstrating that excellence and personal life can harmonise beautifully. His legacy inspires and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
