Ladoke Akinola Airport Upgrade: Gov Makinde Commences Second Phase with New Int’l Terminal

Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, has laid the foundation for the new International Terminal of the Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan, marking the commencement of the second phase of the airport’s upgrade to international standards. This development is a continuation of the milestone achieved on September 18, 2024, when the groundbreaking event for the upgrade took place.

The project is divided into two phases, with the first phase focusing on upgrading the runway, airport lighting, and fire services, which has been successfully completed. The second phase involves constructing a new International Airport Terminal and related infrastructure. Once completed, the new terminal building will accommodate up to 1 million passengers annually, a significant increase from the current capacity of 100,000. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.

Prince Oyelade who described Governor Makinde as a promise keeper, said that International airline commuters from Oyo and adjoining States can take a flight directly from Ibadan to any part of the world.

The foundation laying was performed on behalf of the Governor by the Chairman, Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport Upgrade Committee, Mr Abimbola Adekanbi, who said that the commencement of the construction of a new terminal building is an extraordinary moment in the history of Oyo State.

He described the project as a major transformation and testament to the unwavering vision and exceptional leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde.

Identifying the pivotal role airports play in the advancement of any region, Mr Adekanbi described the new International Airport as essential catalyst for economic development, trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.

“In September 2024, we marked the beginning of this ambitious transformation with the extension of the runway to 3000 meters, meeting international standards and regulatory requirements to accommodate larger aircraft.” Adekanbi said.

“We are proud of the progress made thus far, but today, we take another giant leap forward with the foundation laying of the new terminal building-a crucial component of our upgrade plan.

“Once completed, this state-of-the-art Terminal Building will accommodate up to 1 million passengers annually, a massive increase from the current capacity of 100,000.

“The project, which will be delivered by Craneburg Construction Company Limited, is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2026.

“This will not only ease the flow of passengers but will also boost the airport’s cargo handling capacity, positioning Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport as a top-tier facility in Nigeria.” He added.

At the foundation laying ceremony were representatives of Airlines and other stakeholders.
