Oyo Town Has Lost An Enigma – Alayande Varsity VC, ‘Lanre Olaniyan Mourns Chief Lasisi Ayankojo

Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo has joined families, friends, political associates, and indigenes of Oyo kingdom in mourning the departure of an illustrious son of Oyo town, Alh. Lasisi Ayanyinka Ayankojo who passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at a ripe age of 94.

According to a release from the University Registrar, Mrs. Olubunmi Siju’ Asunmo, after the management’s condolence visit to the private residence of the deceased, the Vice-Chancellor described baba Ayankojo as a father and friend of the University, adding that he was a great man and an enigma.

The release reads in quote, “With a heavy heart, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olanrewaju Olaniyan has received the news of the passing of a friend of the University and a father-figure, Alh. Chief Lasisi Ayanyinka Ayankojo who died on Thursday, November 21, 2024. Baba Ayankojo was by every standard, an enigma who would be sorely missed.

“Indeed, the void left by his departure is profound and very deep to us and the entire Oyo community.

“The renowned politician and community leader’s life was undoubtedly a tapestry of distinguished service, professional excellence, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of Oyo town, Oyo State and Nigeria as a nation.”

The University Chief Administrative Officer described Ayankojo’s life “as one that epitomizes integrity, kindness, and generosity. His advice was always rooted in experience and compassion. His philanthropic spirit, which uplifted countless lives, was a testament to his belief in the power of giving and community support. He truly demonstrated this until his last breath”, the release stated.

Alhaji (Chief) Lasisi Ayanyinka Ayankojo, a revered teacher, cultural advocate, politician, and statesman, was born in 1929 in Oyo. He began his career in education, teaching at various institutions and nurturing young minds while promoting Yoruba culture. His dedication to cultural values earned him and his cultural team a place at the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture, FESTAC ’77. As a sports master, Alhaji Ayankojo led his local female handball team to golden victories at both the State and National Sports Festivals twice, demonstrating his commitment to youth development through sports. In public service, Alhaji Ayankojo, alongside other progressive minds, played a pivotal role in the development of Oyo State. They were instrumental in transforming the Isale-Oyo Community Grammar School farmland into what is now Emmanuel Alayande University of Education. He also contributed to the establishment of key community institutions, including Sabo Market, Sabo Motor Park, Isale-Oyo Microfinance Bank, and the Local Government acquisition of the Ayetoro Scheme.
As Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Alhaji Ayankojo spearheaded reforms that significantly improved transparency, accountability, and healthcare delivery at the grassroots. His visionary proposal for the Head of Local Government Administration (HLA) system to reduce workplace conflicts and improve efficiency was approved and implemented by then-Governor Abiola Ajimobi, transforming local governance in Oyo State.

During his tenure as Chairman of the Local Government Pension Board, he uncovered and addressed a ₦5.6 billion pension fraud, ensuring justice. His advocacy for the creation of Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) brought governance closer to the people, fostering stronger community-focused administration.

A devout Muslim and committed community leader, Alhaji Ayankojo’s lifelong efforts in justice, education, and governance left an indelible mark on his community and Oyo State at large.
