
Senator Buhari has emphasized the need for enhanced safety measures in Nigeria’s aviation sector to boost passenger confidence and drive growth. This call follows a recent report by the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) on the Air Peace runway incident at Port Harcourt on June 22, 2025, which exposed critical gaps in safety standards and operational compliance.
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Aviation and Aerospace Development explained that while no life was lost in the incident, it is imperative to addressed the menance that exposed critical gaps in safety standards, infrastructure management and operational compliance within Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Senator Buhari concluded that Nigeria has in recent years witnessed an increase in runway-related incidents, near-mises and operational satefy challenges among others.
Contributing to the motion, the duo of Senators Orji Uzor Kalu and Mohammed Gone reiterated the need for Ministry of Aviation to sit-up and ensure all relevant agencies and airlines complire with safety regulations in aviation sector. They also urged the Ministry to fast-track the construction of second runway in Abuja airport.
The Deputy President of Senate, Jubrin Barau while calling for the adoption of the prayers of the motion thanked Senator Buhari for moving such important motion.
“It is very important because aviation is an important sector of every economy. We can not joke with aviation in order not to injure our economy and our people. I call on the committee, I know it is headed by someone who is very diligent and reliable, a consumate legislator, well experience who started from House of Representatives before Senate. I know he is going to do a good job” he concluded
