Olubadan Elevates Ilaji Hotels and Sports Resort Boss, Dotun Sanusi To Jagun As Ibadan Mogajis Unite for Him

In an unusual display of affection, the compound heads of Ibadan rallied behind Engr. Dotun Sanusi as he was appointed the Jagun Olubadan of Ibadanland by Ọba Lekan Balogun, marking a significant departure from tradition. Sanusi’s promotion introduced him to the civil line of the Olubadan chieftaincy system, alongside fifteen other senior chiefs who were also promoted on the same day.

This elevation occurred shortly after the passing of Senior Chief Lateef Oyelade, which led to a reshuffling of positions in the Ibadan chieftaincy hierarchy. Surprisingly, instead of the usual competition for Jagun positions, all Mogajis unanimously agreed to let Sanusi, who was not only the Apesinola of Ibadan but also the Mogaji of Olugbade compound of Oja’ba, take the role. This position is the gateway to the lines of succession, namely Otun (civil) and Balogun (military) to the throne.

Lateef Oyelade, the former Ekefa Olubadan of Ibadanland, passed away in early September, leaving 15 vacancies in the Otun line of the Olubadan Chieftaincy system. This unique system, with its two lines, would have typically seen many Mogajis vying for the vacant Jagun seat, with the Olubadan and his council making the final selections. However, Sanusi’s philanthropic endeavors and generosity earned him this honor.

As a prominent billionaire businessman, he owns various establishments in Oyo State, including Ilaji hotels and sports resorts, as well as Ibadan College of Arts, Science, and Technology (ICAST).

His contributions to the community, such as revitalizing Akanran, the headquarters of Ona-Ara local government, and donating 80 transformers to local communities in the ancient city, garnered widespread acclaim.

The event, attended by new Ọbas in Ibadan, featured notable figures like Hon. Babatunde Oduyoye and prominent Mogajis such as Ahaji Abass Oloko, Chief Nurudeen Akinade, Chief Demola Olasomi, and others.

In a brief statement to the media at the event, Sanusi expressed his gratitude to Ọba Balogun and the other Ibadan Obas and chiefs for their support, pledging to continue his philanthropic efforts.
